Dan K. Kurland, piano
Dan K. Kurland is establishing himself as one of today’s most talented and versatile collaborative pianists in both vocal and instrumental repertories. He begins the 2017 – 2018 season as Solorepetitor mit Dirigierverpflichtung at Theater Hagen (Germany).
This past season included wide-ranging appearances throughout the United States, including an acclaimed performance of Schoenberg’s Das Buch der Hängenden Gärten at the Aspen Music Festival and School with tenor Spencer Lang, a recital with tenor Stephen Ng and baritone Randall Scarlata at West Chester University, and a performance at The Juilliard School with pianist Jonathan Feldman. Additionally, Mr. Kurland presented a special, one-night-only performance with Tony and Emmy award winner Tyne Daly in the Chicago area.
Previous seasons have included performances at New York’s Steinway Hall, The DiMenna Center, The Guggenheim Museum and annual return engagements to Alice Tully Hall and Caramoor. His debut at Wigmore Hall in 2015 with tenor Spencer Lang garnered the Finalist Prize for the duo as part of the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition. Mr. Kurland has enjoyed collaborations with sopranos Stacey Alleaume, Rebecca Farley, and Raquel González, mezzo-sopranos Avery Amereau and KS Marilyn Bennett, tenor Miles Mykkanen, violinists Jiafeng Chen, Eric Silberger, and Charles Yang, violist Jenni Seo, cellist Julian Schwarz, and actors Shalita Grant, Ernestine Jackson, Michael Kostroff, and the critically acclaimed string quintet SYBARITE5.
Frequently engaged a pianist for opera productions, he has served as part of the music staffs of Wolf Trap Opera and The Glimmerglass Festival. He has also been a member of the faculty at The Martina Arroyo Foundation’s Prelude to Performance program and the Franco-American Vocal Academy (FAVA) in Périgueux, France. Previously, Mr. Kurland presented master classes at Juilliard in Aiken, Columbia University’s Opera Untapped, and at Highland Park High School’s Focus on the Arts. As an entrepreneur during his time at The Juilliard School, Mr. Kurland was founding music director/pianist for the Vocal Arts Cabaret and curator of the collaborative piano department’s Two Piano Concerts. Prior to moving to Germany, he maintained a very active vocal coaching studio in New York where he worked with vocalists on the rosters of the country’s top opera companies, including The Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, The Santa Fe Opera, and Opera Philadelphia.
